Thanks. He's taming up nicely, too. He no longer hisses at me when I
pick him up, and seems content to hide in my shirt pocket all day. I
just fed him and he devoured two pinkies dipped in ReptoCal powder.

Exotic Pets in Las Vegas. I used to have a Great Basin gopher snake I
caught on a mountain road just north of Las Vegas ten years ago, but
he escaped. He had nicer coloring than the Sonoran, but all gopher
snakes are illegal here in California and the only Great Basin I could
find was from an online vendor in Florida. I was passing through
Vegas and they had two Sonoran specimens, one adult for $80 and this
baby for $30.

In CA, it is legal to capture and keep any snake with a valid fishing
license (well, except for endangered or otherwise protected snakes -
gopher, king, garter and such snakes are perfectly fine). I also
recall from my time there that non-native subspecies are not
regulated, nor are color morphs that are not found in the wild - thus
you could keep a bull snake (the subspecies of gopher snake found east
of the Rockies), or an albino or high yellow or white sided gopher
snake.
