Newborn Corn Snake Problem

Hi. I have an unusual snake situation that I need urgent advice on.

We're babysitting a clutch of corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus) eggs
in an incubator for a friend. The clutch is at full term, but so far
only one has hatched. The first newborn is showing what may possibly
be a potentially fatal defect: the yolk sac appears to still be
attached to the snake by an umbilicus.

It initially was sluggish, although we've kept it isolated in a
plastic box inside the incubator on a wet paper towel, and it appears
to have revived somewhat. However, we are uncertain what to do, or if
it will survive without some sort of intervention. Has anyone ever
had experience with this situation? Any advice on this is greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben W.

After it hatches out of the egg, it should still have the yolk
attached to it. It will finish absorbing the yolk after a few days.
Is it completely out of the egg? usually they pip from the egg, then
sit there for awhile waiting while the yolk absorbs.
